Ace and Aro Iceland

About us

The Ace & Aro association was formerly founded on February 25th, 2018 at Samtökin 78, Suðurgötu 3, 101 Reykjavík. The history of the club is longer, but for a long time there was no ace/aro community in Iceland. On June 28th, 2015, a closed Facebook group for aces was created, but few people knew about it, as it is a closed group and therefore cannot be searched for. The reason for that was and is that many of the participants simply haven't come out yet and the group is supposed to be a safe place.

It was in May 2017 that there was a discussion on the queer forum on Facebook about whether there was a site or group to focus on. So on May 29th, 2017, Gyða Bjarkadóttir took the initiative and created the Like page Asexual á Íslandi (Asexuals in Iceland) on Facebook, which was later changed to Ásar á Íslandi (Aces in Iceland). Then the ball started rolling, many people contacted Gyða through the page, which she dutifully added to the closed group.

The group grew and it was decided to take part in the 2017 parade, which was the first time that aces marched together in Iceland. It received a lot of coverage in the media, newspapers, web media, radio and television. To the group's delight, it received the Queer Days Encouragement Award that year. It was the consensus of the jury and it was said that the group was prominent, i.a. in the media and the group did a good job preparing and giving advice where appropriate. This was such a kick in the ass that we officially founded The Ace association in Iceland. The name of the like page was then changed to Ásar á Iceland and is now in the hands of the company's board.

The company has grown steadily and education has increased. We have had a good collaboration with Samtökin 78 and we became officially affiliated with in 2019. We are incredibly proud of how far we have come in a short time, but the work is not finished. We must continue to be visible and promote education.
